Abbreviations and roles explained
R.N = Royal Navy
R.N.R = Royal Navy Reserve
R.N.V.R = Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve
R.F.R = Royal Fleet Reserve
R.M.L.I = Royal Marine Light Infantry
C.G = Coastguard
Able Seaman = A seaman with more than two years’ experience
Acting Sub-Lieutenant = Subordinate officer who had gained role be order not commission
Blacksmith’s mate = Responsible for all welding and forging – repairing chains and parts
Boy = a cadet
Bugler = Made short calls on the bugle to pass orders
Ch. Arm (Pens) = Chief armourer pensioner = has been pensioned off but recalled in wartime
Chief Armourer = Responsible for maintaining and repairing small arms and weapon systems
Chief Gunner = worked with artillery
Colour Sargeant = Protected the ensigns and flags
Cooper = Made and repaired barrels, casks and buckets
Corporal = Most senior of the junior ratings in the Royal Navy
Engine Room Artificer = Able to read and write, fitter and turner, boilermaker, coppersmith or enginesmith.
Donkeyman = In charge of the donkey engine – a small engine that was used to propel the coal into the primary engine. Also in charge of the small engines on board.
Engineer = Responsible for management and upkeep of onboard machinery
Fireman = Responsible for keeping the fires going
Greaser = Responsible for oiling machinery
Jun R.A = Junior radio artificer
Lieutenant = A commissioned officer. The most senior role in the junior ranks
Leading Seaman = Senior to Able Seaman but junior to a Petty Officer
M.A.A = Master at Arms. A senior officer in charge of discipline.
Midshipman = Lowest ranking officer (if proby preceding, it is a probational role)
Ordinary Seaman = Between 1-2 years’ experience at sea
Ordinary Signalman = Responsible for transmitting, receiving, encoding, decoding and distributing messages
Petty Officer = senior to the seaman and responsible for the day-to-day supervision of them
Private = a professional soldier/sailor
Shipwright = Responsible for building and repairs
Steward = Maintain standards of service the equal of a hotel for senior officers
Stoker = Specialized in engine room duties – shifted coal
Storekeeper = Maintaining ship supply stores
Surgeon = Ship’s doctor (with Tempy proceeding it the role was for wartime only)
Trimmer = Position in engineering department of a coal fired ship – involved coal handling tasks
Warrant Telegraphist = Responsible for all elements of wireless communications
Writer = Clerical work and responsible for human resources
