Gallery

The photographs on this page come from one photo album that was put together by ERA Richard Arnold Clarke.  Unfortunately, I didn't properly discover the album until after I had published my book so many of the photos are not featured in the book or if they are, they are poorer quality.  I have tried to break up the photos into categories to make them easier to understand.

Jorstadmoen

Photographs and postcards from the British Internment camp in Jorstadmoen.

Hjerkinn

Internees were given the option to work in Hjerkinn in 1916.  They were sent to work on the construction of the Dovrebanen railway.

Opdal

In 1918, internees were again given the opportunity to live outside of camp and work on the Dovrebanen railway.  This time they were sent to Opdal.  Arnold worked driving engines.

Faaberg

Faaberg was the closest town to the camp.  One newsworthy incident in the three years the British Internees were in town was when the bridge broke.

Fire

To my knowledge, there were two hut fires in the time the British sailors were interned in Norway.  At least one, if not both, were the huts that Arnold was housed in. I am not sure which fire these photos are of but they are a dramatic representation of the devastation that was caused.

The men

I am unfortunately unable to identify the vast majority of the men in these photos however they are all united in their experience of crewing a ship that was torpedoed and spending time as Prisoners of War in Norway.
